I listen to a lot of Disney podcats and look at a lot of Disney sites, and I’ve seen a TON of wailing and moaning about the fact that “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Play It” is closing at Disney-MGM Studios. Personally, I’m not that upset about it.
I only saw the attraction once, several years ago. We were on a trip to WDW with another couple that we were good friends with, not too long after the attraction opened. The “set” was almost full and the competition was pretty fierce, since “Millionaire” was still pretty popular. As it happened, our friend Bill won the fastest finger and got to sit in the hot seat. At the time, the ultimate prize was a trip to New York to see a taping of the real “Millionaire.” I think he made it to maybe $4,000 or $8,000 before he lost, which put him back to $1,000. He won a hat and several “Millionaire” pins. All in all, pretty cool.
But not that cool. I mean, if you are really into Millionaire, then you are probably pretty upset about it closing. Actually, I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did. I’m certainly looking forward to what’s going to replace it, which is rumored to be a “Toy Story”-themed attraction called “Midway Mania”. Given the choice, I’ll take Buzz and Woody over “Regis” any day.
